"I Can" Vs. "I Can't"
By Coach Alanna Maniatis
What you choose to put into your mind will ultimately determine the course of your actions.
In simply telling yourself you "can't" do something, you have already delayed your progress. Often, the mind is the greatest barrier between you and that extra 5-pound PR, that extra few inches on a box jump, or even showing up for that challenging workout you see the night before.
While it is good to know your limits, be aware that, for the most part, your coaches know them too. That’s why we push you, with full intention to keep you safe. Trust us, trust me, I am overly cautious, but when I tell you that you CAN, its because I know your potential.
Next time you step up to that barbell, box, bar, or set of rings; tell yourself you can. I promise you, the outcome will be either a huge result or small incremental improvements that turn you into a better version of yourself. This applies both in the gym, and every other aspect of your life.
Try framing every potentially negative situation into a positive. Instead of saying “don't forget to ____” say “remember to _____”. Any upset on your journey is a chance to make you stronger. Have a less than desirable day in the gym, school or work? Come back the next day with a vengeance. Frustrated with your progress? Change your attitude, reflect on your actions and start by finding a way to be more committed, even if its forced at first. Soon it will become habit, your telling yourself you can, will turn into you did.
Believe in yourself, because we sure do.
